It was the baby's 16th birthday and I said I'd make the cake. She said something under her breath, but I didn't quite catch it.
This is the cake. Now, on the plus side, I am consistent at least. A few times a year, without fail (so to speak), I turn out one of these monstrosities.
When one of the girls was much younger I plonked one of these babies on the table at their birthday party and an uncomfortable silence befell the crowd. Then my husband asked me why the cake had 'stretch marks'.
Not to be discouraged, I'll give it another crack in a few weeks time when we have another birthday. Say what you will about me, but I have no fear of failure.
As Winston Churchill said, 'Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts'.
Although he most probably wasn't talking about birthday cakes.
